Dance To the Music: All About Music Sense!
J has something of a unique power; for those who want it, there's an explanation below.
What is Music Sense?
In the world of Elite Beat Agents, every living thing has a tune - a personal melody unique to them and only them. These tunes come together to form the Music, essentially the ebb and flow of life given a voice. Not many people can hear it, though - for most people, the world goes on as normal. J, however, is one of the few people who can hear it and tap into it.
What can J hear?
J is experienced enough with the Music that he can pick an individual tune out. Within that tune, he can hear:
Relative age - child, teenager, adult, elderly, etc. If you're 21 and you look 18, no big deal; if you're 45 and you look 22, bigger deal; if you're 900 and you look 31, yeah, he's definitely gonna notice.
Mood - he can pick up on moods, with the subtle ones being more difficult to parse out than the larger ones. Distress, anger, and fear will always stand out more, namely because they're a lot more dissonant within the Music.
Honesty - it's a subtle subset of mood, but it's a bit easier to pick up on whether someone is telling the truth by how it plays out in their tune. An experienced liar can hide it fairly well, but otherwise he's fairly good at picking up on it.
Species - it's not quite that specific, but he can definitely tell whether the tune in question belongs to a human or not.
Damage - the brainwashing process has damaged the tunes of the kidnapped musicians, and that sticks out pretty badly. The tunes skip and warp, occasionally even creating feedback where the damage is the worst.
What can J do with it?
At his best, stuff like this:
...but that's a full-on mission with a full team, and between powers being dampened and him being here without any fellow Agents, that's not likely to happen in Interstellar.
Essentially, J can manipulate the music via rhythms of his own. At its strongest, it's coordinated dance with several other Agents to help someone in extreme need or distress. In Interstellar, it'll be much more subtle - tapping fingers, beatboxing, smaller motions that won't draw too much attention in public, all trying to nudge broken tunes back towards wholeness. Bottom line, he's here to help, and this is how he does it.
